Stone City is a Pagan center located in the wild hills of California's Diablo Range, just outside the San Francisco Bay Area, in eastern Santa Clara County. Stone City is dedicated to creating sacred spaces for ritual, worship of Pagan deities, and community gatherings. All Pagan faiths and traditions are welcome. You can check out photos of the site and other information on our website at www.thestonecity.org.
Our most unique feature is probably the Henge: a circle of standing stones with alignments to holy days of the Pagan year. The Henge is built on a hilltop with a wide vista of the surrounding hill horizons, in an oval shape that follows the natural contour of the hill. It is roughly 60 feet long by 40 feet wide, with a large fire pit and altar stone inside. The standing stones making up the ring vary from about 2 to 7 feet high, and they include alignments for true north; Yule, Ostara, and Beltaine sunrises; and Litha, Lughnassadh, and Samhain sunsets. The Samhain sunset alignment is formed by a large dolmen (a trilithon made up of two standing stones with a capstone) which makes up the Samhain gate into which the sun sets. We began taking alignments for the stones in 2002 and completed the last stone raising at Samhain of 2005.
We also have a ritual circle established around our May Tree, which is a living tree we use for our Beltaine Maypole rituals, and several other sacred sites in development. These include a Horned God shrine near the May tree, a labyrinth planned near the Henge, a holy well and Brigid shrine, a site dedicated to the Morrigan, and an Underworld shrine. We base our plans for shrines and ritual spaces based on the patterns in the land itself as well as on the needs and interests of the community, so other shrines and sites can be added to our growing plans depending on your interests and willingness to get involved.
Here’s a bit more about what Stone City has to offer Ancient Ways Festival:
Stone City was founded by Morpheus Anima and Shannon Moore on our land in Santa Clara County, beginning in 2002. Our purpose is to provide gathering space and facilities for Pagan community events, and permanent sacred spaces dedicated to the Old Gods. Stone City does not serve one single tradition or subset of the community exclusively - our intention is to be available to multiple traditions as a place for gathering, worship and support. Our community of friends and supporters is wonderfully diverse, representing people with backgrounds and practices including witches from many traditions (Feri, Gardnerian, Reclaiming, California Eclectic, and more), Druids, Thelemites, practitioners of Celtic and Norse faiths, Kemetics, members of NROOGD and CAW, shamans and animists, Buddhists, and others. We are dedicated to fostering ties between traditions and strength within the Pagan community.
In addition to making the sanctuary available to reserve for gatherings such as Ancient Ways, we also host public Pagan rituals for some of the holy days of the Pagan year, including cross-quarter days such as Samhain and Beltaine, and Solstice and Equinox rituals as well. These events are open to the Pagan community and are a good opportunity to get acquainted with the site and meet your hosts. For our public gatherings we collaborate with community members to create rituals which are not drawn from a single tradition, but which tend to be influenced by sources such as Celtic tradition and Feri witchcraft.
Stone City is organized as a 501(c)3 religious non-profit organization. This allows for donations of tools, materials, and funds to be tax deductible from the giver's income tax. We greatly appreciate help from the community to continue developing the sanctuary, and welcome your contributions, be it funds, materials, or volunteer help at our regular work parties. A “wish list” of things we need for current and ongoing projects is posted at our website (www.thestonecity.org), along with the current schedule of work parties and ritual gatherings.
